EMSLIBS history

The EMSLIBS (Euro-Mediterranean Symposium on Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) series is a premier biennial international conference focused on LIBS technology, with a history dating back to 2001. It serves as a major forum for scientists and engineers to discuss advancements in laser-induced plasma, spectroscopy, and material analysis.

The symposium began as a regional, Mediterranean-focused initiative but has grown into a significant global gathering, often alternating with other major LIBS conferences.
  • 1st EMSLIBS (2001): Cairo, Egypt (Organized by Mohamed Abdel Harith’s group).

  • 2nd EMSLIBS (2003): Hersonissos, Crete, Greece.

  • 3rd EMSLIBS (2005): Aachen, Germany.

  • 4th EMSLIBS (2007): Rome, Italy

  • 5th EMSLIBS (2009): Tivoli Terme, Rome, Italy.

  • 6th EMSLIBS (2011): Izmir, Turkey

  • 7th EMSLIBS (2013): Bari, Italy.

  • 8th EMSLIBS (2015): Linz, Austria.

  • 9th EMSLIBS (2017): Pisa, Italy.

  • 10th EMSLIBS (2019): Brno, Czech Republic (Over 200 attendees, organized by CEITEC VUT, Brno).

  • 11th EMSLIBS (2021): Gijón, Spain (Delayed from 2020 due to COVID-19).

  • 12th EMSLIBS (2023): Porto, Portugal.

  • 13th EMSLIBS (2025/2026): Senlis/Paris, France (Held from January 26–30, 2026).

Jubilee 10th EMSLIBS took place in Brno, Czech Republic, the heart of the South Moravian Region. 229 scientists, researchers, engineers, and students from 42 countries all over the world came to contribute with their Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) related research, its applications, and also to define the future of LIBS analysis. It is noteworthy that the heritage lecture was given by Prof. Kay Niemax on The arduous way of LIBS becoming an established technique. Following scientists were awarded Ioannes Marcus Marci  - prof. Nicoló Omenetto, prof. David Hahn and prof. Javier Laserna.
