Prof. RNDr. Jiří Dědina, CSc., DSc.

After obtaining his PhD in physical organic chemistry in 1975, his research has focused on trace element analysis. His current research interests include: (a) the generation, collection, and atomization of volatile compounds for trace and ultratrace element analysis and for speciation by AAS/AFS; and (b) the mechanism of hydride atomization in flames and quartz tube atomizers. He has acted as the principal investigator of numerous grant projects sponsored primarily by the Czech Science Foundation and the Grant Agency of the CAS, and as the foreign co-principal investigator of two grant projects sponsored by NIH/FIRCA (USA) and the UNC School of Public Health (USA). He is also a full professor of analytical chemistry at Charles University, Faculty of Science. He co-authored, with one co-author and as the first author, the first monograph on hydride generation, which remained the only monograph in the field for nearly three decades, as well as several book chapters in the field and over a hundred papers in impacted journals, with the majority focusing on atomic spectrometry. He has delivered almost forty invited lectures at prestigious international conferences. He was awarded the Ioannes Marcus Marci Medal by the Spectroscopic Society of Ioannes Marcus Marci, Prague, and the Nicolaus Konkoly–Thege Medal by the Slovak Spectroscopic Society. He also received honors from the 20th Brazilian ENQA in 2022, followed by awards from the 16th Rio Symposium on Atomic Spectrometry and the Federal University of Santa Maria (Brazil) in 2023. Until his retirement in 2020, he was the Head of the Department of Trace Element Analysis at the Institute of Analytical Chemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences. He was also a member of the Council of Sciences of the Czech Academy of Sciences and chairman of the Commission for the Defense of the Research Professor Degree in the Field of Analytical Chemistry at the Czech Academy of Sciences. Presently, he continues to work as a part-time researcher.
